AreaSum vs Magicplan
One tool measures the plan you already have. The other walks the room and creates the plan from scratch. Different halves of the same workflow.
Magicplan is a phone-and-tablet app that uses your device camera and AR to walk a room, capture its dimensions, and generate a floor plan on the spot. AreaSum is the opposite end of the workflow: you start from an existing floor plan PDF (architect drawing, council plan, real-estate listing) and produce a structured flooring takeoff with per-room area, linear metres and a branded quote PDF. They are complementary more than competitive — but if you only need one, the question is whether you already have a plan or have to create one.
In one line
Pick AreaSum if the customer or builder already has a floor plan PDF. Pick Magicplan if you need to walk the site and generate the plan yourself.
AreaSum vs Magicplan
Magicplan is mobile-first floor plan capture + AR measurement. Here is the honest split feature by feature.

| Platform | Browser (any device) | iOS + Android app |

| Multi-page plans | Yes, scale per page | Multiple captured rooms, one project |
| Pricing model | Monthly SaaS (AUD) | Per-plan or subscription tiers |

Pick AreaSum if…
The customer brought a plan
You already have the PDF in your inbox. AreaSum measures from it directly with no site visit needed for the first quote.
You want a flooring-shaped output
Per-room area, linear metres for skirting, wastage by material, branded quote. Magicplan stops at the plan — you still have to do the takeoff on top.
You quote from the showroom or office
AreaSum runs in any browser. No walking the site required for a credible first number.
Pick Magicplan if…
You are on site without a plan
No drawing in the inbox, no scale bar, just a room. Magicplan turns the phone into a measuring tool and gives you a plan in twenty minutes.
You need the floor plan as the deliverable
Real estate, insurance scoping, builder documentation. Magicplan is built for producing the plan itself, not the flooring quote on top.
You prefer a mobile-first capture workflow
If your team works on phones rather than laptops, Magicplan slots in naturally and the AR capture is its strongest feature.
Common questions about AreaSum vs Magicplan
Can I export a Magicplan drawing into AreaSum?
Magicplan exports PDF and DXF. AreaSum reads PDF, so the workflow is: walk the site in Magicplan, export to PDF, upload to AreaSum, set scale, draw rooms, export the quote. That is two tools instead of one, but it covers the gap where you have to create the plan and then quote off it.
Is Magicplan a flooring takeoff tool?
Not directly. Magicplan is a floor plan capture tool that produces dimensions and area figures as a side effect. The flooring-specific work — wastage by material, totals grouped by carpet or vinyl, branded customer quote — is not its job.
Which one is cheaper?
Magicplan is typically priced per plan or per month with a generous free trial. AreaSum is per month per organisation. For a flooring shop doing five to twenty quotes a week, AreaSum tends to be more predictable on cost. For a one-off capture, Magicplan is the cheaper buy.
